About CMI
Commercial Mortgage & Investment (CMI) was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981 as a mortgage banking firm specializing in construction and commercial loans. In response to a weak economy and the extended financial crisis that began in the early 1990’s, CMI diversified its activities to include real estate development, investing in its own real estate projects and managing developments for other firms and investment entities.
Headquartered today near Salt Lake City, UT, CMI continues to offer a diversified portfolio of services according to the specific needs of each client. CMI and/or its principals have successfully participated in commercial, retail, service, hospitality, industrial and multi-family developments, while also managing or participating in various projects with partners across the U.S. and Central America.

In 2004 CMI embarked on yet another diversification of its business activities in pursuing investments in alternative and renewable energy and adjusting its real estate development focus on mixed-use and self-contained walkable communities. This change in investment and development philosophy occurred in response to the rapid population growth, evolving residential living environment and the accelerated depletion of our natural resources worldwide.
In 2005, CMI President Dan Christensen co-founded Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq:GPRE), currently North America's fourth largest ethanol producer with an annual operating capacity of over 720 million gallons and annual revenue exceeding $3.5 billion.
